Palm Trees and Tropical Sunsets

In June 1931, a party of Queensland government dignitaries and guests, led by Home Secretary J.C. Peterson, boarded the government ketch, Melbidir II, on Thursday Island for an “Inspection Tour of Aboriginal Stations in North Queensland and Torres Strait”. Souvenir albums of the tour reveal the party enjoying the mild conditions offered by a tropical winter sojourn, the images evidence of the government’s success in dealing with the so-called “Aboriginal problem”. These sit in stark contrast to the lived experience of those forced to reside on missions and reserves.
